Arkansas Innovative Users Group--Inaugural Meeting

UALR Law Library

Little Rock, Arkansas

May 24, 2002

Susan Goldner, UALR-Law Library, opened the meeting with a brief overview of the reasons for having an Arkansas Innovative Users Group (AIUG). Reasons included the tendency to turn ARKlink meetings into discussions about INN-Reach and the need for forum better suited to discuss INN-Reach. The high level of interest by Innovative libraries in state resulted in 13 of the 16 Innovative libraries being represented in the meeting.

Susan, outgoing secretary of the IUG, organized this meeting to explore the possibility of organizing the AIUG.

Susan updated the group on talks with Innovative regarding INN-Reach. Carolyn Allen, Dean of Libraries at UAF, has talked with Innovative about having an INN-Reach session and/or presentation in Fall 2002, probably in conjunction with the Arkansas Library Association meeting. INN-Reach is the union catalog product from Innovative that transfers transactions from ILL to circulation. Combined with the AMIGOS-sponsored courier service which guarantees 48 hour delivery, INN-Reach opens many possibilities for our libraries. Later discussions raised questions that users would like to see addressed in an INN-Reach presentation. Issues of compatibility and preparing for INN-Reach could be addressed in a Innovative presentation to AIUG with a more general presentation for all libraries after the conclusion of the Arkansas Library Association meeting on Tuesday, September 23, 2002.

Introductions were made by all attendees. A discussion list sign-up sheet and contact person verification list were circulated.

Susan presented the agenda for the day.

Joint Training: Discussions of the possible ways to conduct joint training included suggestions of joint purchase of Innovative training, video conferencing, discussion list, AIUG website, and mini-presentations recapping IUG presentations. Susan Goldner offered to create and maintain a discussion list. Lynnette Jack, UALR-Ottenheimer Library, offered to host an AIUG webpage that will profile each site's use of INNOPAC/Millennium including release, modules, contacts, and special expertise. Information available on the IUG and CSdirect websites were mentioned as sources for presentations at AIUG meetings.

Forming the AIUG: Discussions on the formation of the AIUG included frequency of meetings, end goal, and meeting content. Through unanimous verbal assent, the AIUG was formed.

Second meeting of the AIUG: The Arkansas Library Association meeting in Little Rock on September 21, 22, and 23, was chosen for the next meeting of the AIUG. Kathy Sanders will work with Conference chair, Karen Russ, to find a convenient time. Kathy Sanders, UALR-Ottenheimer Library; Jennifer Chilcoat, Central Arkansas Library System; Kay Bland, Pulaski Special School District; and, Amanda Moore, Hendrix College, volunteered to serve on a program committee that will organize and plan the program. The AIUG could use meeting space at the Central Arkansas Library System depending on availability. Due to the high demand for CALS meeting space, Saturday, September 21, 2002, was recommended for the AIUG meeting.

Preferred meeting times: Preferences for meeting times were solicited with a request to avoid Friday afternoons due to schedule conflicts for Rogers Public Library.

Catalog naming: Sandra Dupree, UA-Monticello, asked for comments on whether to name or not name the library catalog. Kathy Sanders suggested that naming can be used to increase public awareness. Barbara Dean, UAF, offered the example of the high acceptance and use of InfoLinks by users in Fayetteville. Lynnette Jack suggested that the catalog names can be obsolete if not used and promoted.

Z39.50: A brief question was raised regarding the use of search through catalogs.

Leadership: Amanda Moore nominated Susan Goldner to serve as Chairman of the AIUG. Susan was unanimously elected and graciously accepted the honor. Lynnette Jack will serve as Secretary. The program committee will serve for the next 2 meetings.
